One of the two men charged with the attempted strong-arm robbery of two MSU students Tuesday near MSU’s Rather Hall has been arraigned.

The second man arrested, originally believed to be a perpetrator, will not be charged because he did not participate in the incident, an eyewitness told police.

Benjamin Maxwell Riddle, 23, has no MSU affiliation and was arraigned today on charges of theft from a person before East Lansing’s 54-B District Court Judge Richard D. Ball.

Riddle is currently being held at the Ingham County Jail on a $10,000 cash surety bond.

His pre-trial appearance is set for 8:30 a.m. Sept. 2 before Ball, and a preliminary examination is scheduled for 9 a.m. Sept. 5 before Judge Andrea Larkin.

The robbery occurred when Riddle allegedly confronted two students just before 4 a.m. near the entrance to Rather on Tuesday, demanding their wallets.

Before the suspects could make an escape, two other students witnessed the incident and confronted the suspects, forcing the pair to return the wallets.

MSU police picked up the two suspects shortly after when they were spotted walking along Michigan Avenue.

The two had reportedly been visiting guests in Brody Neighborhood.
