After not being picked in the 2014 NBA draft Thursday night, former MSU guard and Detroit Pershing star Keith Appling will begin the next step of his career relatively soon.
Appling has signed a free agent contract with the Portland Trailblazers to play on the Las Vegas summer league team, his agent Michael Silverman confirmed on Friday afternoon.
The Trailblazers will begin summer league play against the New York Knicks on July 12 and will play a minimum of five games.
Former Weber State guard Damian Lillard manned the starting position for Portland last season and was backed up by NBA veteran Mo Williams.
A midseason wrist injury hurt Applings' senior season performance, and his draft stock, following a promising start.
Applings' former teammates Adreian Payne and Gary Harris were drafted 15th and 19th overall, respectively, last night in the 2014 NBA draft. Payne went to the Atlanta Hawks and Harris will join the Denver Nuggets.
