Council asked to write support letters for rapid transit project

April 8, 2014

Amid discussion of a bus rapid transit system spanning down the Michigan Avenue and Grand River Avenue corridor, CATA Assistant Executive Director Debbie Alexander has released the results of a charrette that was held for East Lansing residents.

During the charrettes, residents were tasked with creating a layout for the road that included extra lanes for the rapid transit system to run along. The multi-car transportation option likely would resemble a light rail system.

Alexander discussed the results with councilmembers at Tuesday's East Lansing City Council meeting.

In addition to the presentation, councilmembers also were asked to write letters of support for the proposal. The letters would be sent to the U.S. Department of Transportation to help the project receive funding from the federal government.

However, the council seemed very hesitant to give their approval. With much of the project in developmental stages, some councilmembers felt they weren't ready to voice their support.

The council decided on a vote for writing the support to be scheduled in their next work session.
