Women's basketball blowing out Hampton at halftime

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — With most of Carmichael Arena filled with Hampton blue, it was MSU who dominated the first half against No. 12 Hampton in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Behind strong play from redshirt freshman guard Aerial Powers and senior forward Annalise Pickrel, the No. 5 seed Spartans lead Hampton 55-22 at halftime. 

 Powers has 15 points, 11 rebounds, two steals and two blocks. Pickrel has 14 points hit all thee of her 3-point attempts. 

Mills scored MSU's first five points of the game, and Powers made consecutive layups to give MSU a 9-6 lead. Annalise Pickrel knocked down a 3-pointer to give the Spartans some breathing room with a 14-7 lead. 

She hit another one following a steal by Bell, and Jankoska got in on the action with a 3-pointer on the next play to make it a 13-point game. 

Hampton then called timeout. Hampton junior Kenia Cole nailed a 3-pointer to end a 15-1 Spartan run, but layups by Hines and Agee pushed the lead to 14. 

Jankoska nailed two free throws after getting knocked to the ground on a drive to the rim, and the Spartans led 28-10 midway through the half. Pickrel's coast-to-coast layup made it a 36-16 game with 5:36 to go. 

After stuffing freshman Malia Tate-DeFreitas on a drive to the rim, Powers hit a 3-pointer in transition to give MSU a 40-16 lead with under four minutes left. 

Pickrel closed the half with three free throws after getting fouled on a 3-point attempt.
