Students plan service spring break

February 5, 2014

Every day, people around the globe dream of making an impact on the world and helping to create change. A group of students at MSU are taking action on those dreams.

The students are part of the nonprofit organization Students Today Leaders Forever, a nationally recognized organization focused on building leadership among young people while promoting service work.

This spring break, the MSU chapter of the organization will be going on three separate buses, to Atlanta, Ga., said Akhilesh Menawat, an international relations senior and core member of the group.

The buses, distinguished and divided by color, will each take a different route to Atlanta and will stop in a new city every day to perform community service.

“Service projects can range from working at an animal shelter, to cleaning out a river, to invasive species removal to cleaning up a neighborhood,” Menawat said.

The blue bus will be winding its way through West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina.

The green bus will go through Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee.

Finally, the pink bus will travel through Ohio, Pennsylvania, District of Columbia, North Carolina and South Carolina.

“The goal is the same of all the tours — revealing leadership through service, relationship and action,” Menawat said.

Menawat said that the trip, which costs $425, will accept students until all of the seats in the buses fill up. There are around 50 seats left, but Menawat said they fill up fast in the last few weeks before spring break.

The cost of the trip covers all travel, lodging, meals and two T-shirts.

Earth science junior Matt Adams said the trip provides a feel-good experience.

“No matter what you’re doing, even if you’re following you feel like a leader,” Adams said.

International relations senior Adam Burns said he recommends the trip to any student trying to make their spring break meaningful.

“If you want to have a meaningful experience, to give back to your community, meet some great people and have the time of your life while traveling to numerous American cities and to come back a new person, I would encourage people to look into it,” Burns said.
