Latino groups exhibit culture

February 27, 2014

The event, meant to showcase of Latino and multicultural Greek organizations on campus, was full of upbeat multicultural music and performances.

“This event gives them an opportunity to exhibit their organization and let students know what they are about, what they stand for, and what they strongly pursue and believe in,” said Gissel Brito, MSU member of the Latino Greek Exhibition Committee.

Every year, the event is put together by the student organization Cultural de las Razas Unidas, or CRU, which means Uniting of Cultures.

CRU is an organization that represents the Latino and Chicano students at MSU.

“We hope to assemble unity and spread awareness of who we are and celebrate our cultures, as well as make our presence known in higher education,” Brito said.

“We encourage Latinos to get involved and become knowledgeable about resources, clubs and other organizations on campus.”

The five groups that participated in this showcase this year include Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraternity, Delta Tau Lambda Sorority, Kappa Delta Chi and Sigma Lambda Gamma.

Each performance introduced a short slideshow to show the audience the unity and closeness of each organization.

The exhibition had an entertaining host, who kept the energy high by interacting with the audience in between each performance.

At intermission, random people from the audience were pulled down to have a dance contest. Winners won T-shirts.

Alumna Shaylen Jackson said she came to the event to encourage others.

“Two of my students are participating in the event, so I wanted to support them,” Jackson said. “I also thought it would be great to find out what is happening with the Latino Greek community on campus.”

Laughter, applause, cheers and smiles filled the auditorium while the sororities and fraternities danced and promoted their groups.

Minority students from all over campus meet to discuss ways to confront issues that affect their communities.

The students meet during biweekly General Body Meetings or events, such as the Latino Greek Exhibition, every Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Wilson Hall.
