Behind 3-point shooting, MSU leads Purdue at half

February 20, 2014

It’s raining three-pointers in West Lafayette as the No. 13 MSU men’s basketball team leads Purdue 49-38 at the half.

The Spartans finished 13-of-19 from long range, by far the most three-pointers they’ve shot in any half this season.

Sophomore guard Gary Harris leads all scorers with 19 points, 15 of which came on three-point shots. Senior center Adreian Payne scored 13 points, including eight of the first 10 for MSU.

After not starting for the fifth straight game, senior guard Keith Appling made his first appearance with just over 16 minutes left in the half.

On his first possession, he brought the ball down the floor and executed a pick and role before finding Payne for a wide-open three-pointer.

MSU got out to a 13-7 lead, but the Boilermakers fought back to tie it after six straight points from freshman Kendall Stephens.

Stephens finished the half with a team-high 15 points for Purdue.

But MSU went on a quick 9-0 run behind three consecutive three-pointers from Payne, sophomore guard Gary Harris and junior guard Travis Trice.

Six of MSU’s first ten shots were from beyond the arc, and it took until nearly the nine-minute mark for them to make a two-point field goal.

Junior guard Russell Byrd became the sixth Spartan to pull on his three-point suspenders when he nailed a long ball with just over two minutes left.

If one thing kept Purdue in the game, it was free throw shooting.

Payne, Trice, Denzel Valentine, Matt Costello, Gavin Shilling, Kenny Kaminski and Alvin Ellis all picked up two fouls in the first half, and the Boilermakers went 14-of-20 from the charity stripe.
