MSU heading to Ann Arbor for matchup with U-M

January 12, 2014

Fresh off an upset of No. 16 Nebraska for a fourth-straight win, the streaking women’s basketball team (10-5 overall, 2-0 Big Ten) is playing its best basketball of the season.

On Sunday, the Spartans will try to end the four-game winning streak of a familiar rival.

MSU will travel to Ann Arbor to take on the Michigan Wolverines (11-4 overall, 2-0 Big Ten) at 4:30 p.m. The Spartans have won 21 of the last 23 games in the series and split the series last year, suffering a close 70-69 defeat at Crisler Center.

This year, the Spartans only have one game against the Wolverines, breaking the trend of getting a home-and-away match.

Michigan is led in scoring by junior guard Shannon Smith, who is averaging 15 points per game. Smith is the daughter of former MSU basketball player Kevin Smith, who played for the Spartans from 1979-82.

Freshman guard Siera Thompson is second on the team in scoring average with 13.8. Junior guard Nicole Elmblad is averaging 12.7 points and 8.7 rebounds, and Cyesha Goree is posting 12.2 points and 9 rebounds.
