Documentary showcases lives of Spartans

January 30, 2014

The daily lives of Spartans across the globe will be condensed into a video as part of the documentary project 360.24, executed by MSU Communications and Brand Strategy.

The 30-minute project allowed Spartans everywhere to send in video clips and photos during a 24-hour span on Nov. 6 of this past year, showing what the Spartans around the globe did on that day.

The goal of the video was to showcase the lives of Spartans on a global scale.

Big Ten Network Executive Producer Jim Peck said they received videos of everything ranging from people waking up and pouring their morning coffee to someone flying a fighter jet off an aircraft carrier.

“(Spartans) are just ordinary people that do extraordinary things,” Peck said.

Peck said the best way to describe the video was the “the ultimate global selfie” because it shows off the broad the activities of Spartans across the globe.

Hundreds of photos and videos were sent in from Spartans. According to Heather Swain, the vice president of Communications and Brand Strategy, there was media sent in from six continents and over 30 times zones.

“We wanted to know some things about Spartans and what they care about and how they live their lives,” Swain said. “I think it does show Spartans making a difference and how they engage with the world and they work they are doing.”

Swain estimated that around 400 Spartans sent in material to help with the documentary. She considers the video to be a huge success.

“I definitely think it was a success in accomplishing what we meant to do, which was to give people an opportunity to participate in showing us their world,” Swain said. “We also did some filming to highlight and showcase some different Spartans that are out there so that it’s all blended together showing how people make a difference.”

The video went live Thursday night at msu.edu/24 and will air live nationally on the Big Ten Network in February.
