With one half that saw a combined 33 3-point attempts in the books, it’s the No. 1 Spartans who are in the locker room with a 50-38 lead.
Travis Trice, Alvin Ellis III, Denzel Valentine, Alex Gauna and Matt Costello all started for the Spartans, which could very well be MSU’s starting five next season. Adreian Payne, Keith Appling and Branden Dawson all checked in six minutes into the game with Gary Harris sitting out the game with an ankle injury. Appling leads the team with nine points, while Trice and Valentine both have seven apiece. Dawson is the game’s glass cleaner thus far as he has eight rebounds.
Valentine, Trice and Ellis all buried 3-pointers in the first four minutes of the game, but St. Mary’s stole the ran the shooting clinic early on by nailing their first five long balls of the day. The Mountaineers went on to shoot 8-of-21 from behind the arch, with freshman forward Will Miller leading the game with 15 points, all off 3-pointers.
The closest the Mountaineers have got to controlling this game is when they tied the contest at 19. On the next possession Gavin Schilling took out a band director while diving to save a ball from going out of bounds, climbed back over the press bench, received the pass on the next possession and dunked it home to go up 23-19.
Redshirt freshman forward Kenny Kaminski knocked down his first two 3-pointers of the game, totaling six points on the half. Payne also contributed to the 3-point fest with two of his own and has six points as well.
