MSU hockey loses to Western, 4-1

November 23, 2013

MSU (3-7) dropped its fourth straight game Saturday night as the Western Michigan Broncos (5-5-2, 2-2 NCHC) thumped the Spartans, 4-1.

WMU completed the sweep of the Spartans in the home-and-home series, scoring early and often Saturday night at Lawson Ice Arena in Kalamazoo, Mich. The Broncos held MSU to only one goal during the weekend, blanking the Spartans 2-0 Friday night at Munn Ice Arena.

Bronco sophomore defenseman Kenney Morrison scored the first goal of the game at the 4:09 mark of the first period. Junior forward Justin Kovacs quickly netted another Bronco goal just five minutes later, giving WMU a 2-0 lead heading into the first intermission.

WMU padded their lead in the 2nd period with two more goals from freshman defenseman Chris Dienes and senior forward Shane Berschbach. Dienes found the back of the net 12:19 into the 2nd period. Berschbach iced the Bronco win with the fourth goal in the final minutes of the period.

MSU reshman forward Mackenzie MacEachern netted the Spartans’ lone goal of the weekend series in the 3rd period at 7:31. Freshman forward Thomas Ebbing and redshirt freshman Brock Krygier each had assists on the goal. The goal was the fourth of the season for MacEachern.

MSU was able to generate more scoring chances than Friday’s matchup, outshooting the Broncos 29 to 26. Junior forward Brent Darnell led the team with 6 shots on net.

MSU continued their faceoff success, winning 31 of 55 faceoffs on the night. Senior forward Lee Reimer dominated in the circle Saturday, winning 17 of his 24 faceoffs.

The Spartans struggled to stay out of the penalty box, racking up seven more penalties Saturday night. The Broncos took advantage of their powerplay opportunities scoring two powerplay goals.

MSU’s power play unit struggled for a second straight night, failing to score on any of their five power plays.

Sophomore goaltender Jake Hildebrand gave up four goals and finished with 22 saves on the night.

MSU will lace up the skates again next week on Friday night at 7 p.m. versus the Princeton Tigers (3-8, 2-6 ECAC). The Spartans will play the Eastern Coast Athletic Conference foe on Friday night and Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m., with both games at Munn Ice Arena.
