Men's soccer moves to Big Ten semifinals

November 13, 2013

A chance at a repeat is still in the cards.

The No. 20 MSU men’s soccer team beat Ohio State 2-0 in the first round of the Big Ten Men’s Soccer Tournament in Columbus, Ohio Wednesday afternoon.

The Spartans will play either Wisconsin or Northwestern at 2:30 p.m. Friday with a trip to the tournament final for the second year in a row on the line.

MSU peppered Ohio State keeper Alex Ivanov early, firing six shots at the net in the first 20 minutes.

But the Buckeyes fought back and forced sophomore goalkeeper Zach Bennett to make a couple good saves to keep the game scoreless.

When the Buckeyes went on the attack, much of it was caused by errors from MSU.

MSU kept the intensity high in the second half, and got the first four shots of the half.

McIntosh found the back of the net in the 57th minute after a cross from sophomore midfielder Jay Chapman that McIntosh put in the upper right corner.

Three minutes later, Ohio State was awarded a penalty kick after an aggressive challenge from Bennett, but the shot went off the bar to keep the Spartans in front.

Conerty netted the clincher when his shot hit the post and bounced past the keeper in the 67th minute.

The Spartans outshot the Buckeyes, 20-16, and had 11 shots on target, while Bennett made five saves.

MSU beat Northwestern in a 3-2, double overtime thriller on Oct. 6, and fell 1-0 at Wisconsin in late October.
