Field hockey ends regular season with win over Iowa

November 3, 2013

Senior midfielder Katherine Jamieson waited until the end to her biggest performance of the season.

Jamieson’s hat trick led the Spartans (9-9 overall, 4-2 Big Ten) to a 4-3 win over Iowa to close regular season.

Jamieson had an assist to go with her three goals. Junior forward Abby Barker had a goal and an assist. Senior goalkeeper Molly Cassidy had nine saves.

Barker continued her strong season offensive performance by scoring her eleventh goal of the season off a rebound just over a minute into the match.

Jamieson scored her first goal 14 minutes into the game to give MSU a 2-0 lead. Iowa got on board in the 26th minute when Marike Strabos struck the ball from the top of the circle.

In the second half, Jamieson scored with 30:10 on the clock, assisted by junior back Jenni Smith. She scored again five minutes later, assisted this time by Barker.

Iowa had a late comeback attempt that fell short. About 40 minutes into the match, Dani Hemeon scored to cut MSU’s lead to 4-2. Iowa followed with another goal soon after, this time from Niki Schutheis.

The run would end there, and MSU left Iowa with a 4-3 win.

MSU will return to action Wednesday for the beginning of the Big Ten tournament.
