Run, walk, smile

October 20, 2013

MSU fraternity Phi Sigma Pi hosted a Halloween-themed 5k run on Oct. 20 to benefit local youth in need.

Yesterday, MSU fraternity Phi Sigma Pi hosted its annual “Pi Mile”. The event was a 5K run through the campus and featured a Halloween theme. Runners were encouraged to dress up in a Halloween costume for the run and candy was given out at each kilometer of the race.

The race was a loop that started and ended outside of Conrad Hall.

The host, Phi Sigma Pi, is MSU’s honors fraternity. The fraternity hosts the “Pi Mile” each year, and the proceeds are donated to a local charity.

This year the run benefitted the Gateway Community Services, a Lansing-based shelter for runaway, homeless and at-risk youth in Ingham, Eaton, and Clinton counties. Many of the youth from Gateway Community Services participated in the festivities, while others volunteered at the registration desk.

Trophies were given out for the fastest male runner, female runner and walker. In addition, the runner with the best costume won a Jack-O’-Lantern filled with candy.

Phi Sigma Pi service committee Co-chair Collin Stapleton-Reinhold said the turnout this year a good change of pace from past years. He hopes this year can be the start of a positive trend for the 5K run.
