Homecoming Week to focus on superhero theme

October 6, 2013

To celebrate the life-changing impact Spartans have all over the world, MSU’s 2013 Homecoming will include superhuman touches to support this year’s superhero motif.

For this year’s theme, “Creating Spartan Super Heroes,” the MSU Alumni Association has created an MSU league of five superheroes with Sparty as the group leader and each of the other members embodying powers representative of the principles and overall mission of MSU.

The remaining members include The Sower, a former farmer who has the gift of knowledge and carries super seeds that grow solutions to any problem. Cognos, once a candle maker, now keeps the flames of knowledge and curiosity growing bright with her superhuman intellect, telepathy and ability to change things using her mind.

The Muse, a former art teacher, carries a mirrored shield that provides inspiration to solve challenging problems. The final member, Epic, a former Olympian, carries a force field shield and carefully balances physical and mental strength.

This year’s theme and the idea for the superheroes was something that MSU Alumni Association travel and events coordinator Regina Crossf said was a collaborative effort between association members.

“We wanted to help represent MSU and the branding of the university, so we what we did was to look at Michigan State historically and see how that could be reflected in superhero figures,” Cross said. “Our graphic artist, David Jordan, designed the heroes and along with the help of people in our office.”

Cross said this year’s homecoming has so far had more commotion than past homecomings.

“There’s a lot more buzz around homecoming this year because we have such a strong theme that people love,” Cross said. “It’s a great way for people to participate in the parade and be able to dress up and make banners and decorate floats. People are really able to use their imagination because of the theme.”

Cross said this year’s Grand Marshal , Geoff Johns, also has been a major contributor to the excitement surrounding homecoming.

Perfectly fitting for this year’s theme, Johns, an MSU Alumnus, is the chief creative officer of DC Entertainment and is well known in the comic book industry for his work with Justice League #1 and characters such as Green Lantern, The Flash and Superman.

Johns also has written episodes of TV’s “Smallville” and co-produced the movie “Green Lantern.”

Those interested in Johns’ story can attend An Evening with Homecoming Grand Marshal Geoff Johns at 7 p.m. Oct. 9 at Broad Art Museum.

When creating the events for homecoming week, UAB films director and marketing senior Austin Spaldingaf said a few of the events were crafted and tailored to fit this year’s theme; however, several events that have been successful in the past will be returning.

“I have to say, I am really looking forward to Sounds of Homecoming, I went last year and it was amazing,” Spalding said of the a capella and band performance scheduled for Tuesday. “It’s just so cool, because you have a group of people with almost every instrument take any popular song today and execute the lyrics flawlessly. It’s just a really cool thing to hear and witness.”
