In the wake of a 16-day government shutdown, U.S. Congressman Gary Peters’ lead in the race to fill Senator Carl Levin’s seat has widened, according to a report from Public Policy Polling.
Peters, a Democrat who currently represents Michigan’s 14th district, leads Republican Terri Lynn Land 43 percent to 36 percent, the report said, with 21 percent of voters unsure.
“Voters are opposed to the shutdown by a 65/27 margin, and when voters are informed that Peters stood against the shutdown in the House his lead expands to 50/36,” the report indicated.
Terri Lynn Land served as Michigan’s Secretary of State from 2003 to 2011. She declared as a Republican in 2012.
Levin will have served in the Senate for 35 years when he retires after his term expires in 2014. He currently is the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee.
In a bipartisan agreement to resume funding the government and ward off a potentially default on the nation’s debt, hard-line conservatives ultimately accomplished none of their goals in the failed attempt to defund the Affordable Care Act.
The Public Policy Polling report said the shutdown hurt Republicans across the country, focusing specifically on six “key Senate races that will determine control of the body after next year’s election.”
