It was almost an upset, but ultimately the higher-ranked team prevailed.
A week after showing improved defense and ability to close out games, the field hockey team (7-8 overall, 3-1 Big Ten) couldn’t make good of a late 3-1 lead as they fell to No. 3 Penn State (11-3 overall, 4-0 Big Ten) 4-3 in a game that went two overtimes and a penalty shootout.
Both teams were 3-0 in Big Ten play before the match, but with the win, Penn State is now the only undefeated team in the Big Ten.
Senior midfielder Katherine Jamieson, senior midfielder Kristen Henn and junior forward Abby Barker all scored a goal for the Spartans. Jamieson and junior back Jenni Smith had an assist each, and senior goalkeeper Molly Cassidy had 12 saves.
Penn State scored the first goal 33:05 minutes into the game, when junior forward Taylor Herold scored on a penalty corner assisted by senior midfielder Whitney Reddig.
Kristen Henn put MSU on the scoreboard a couple minutes later, deflecting a shot into the net on a penalty corner. Jamieson assisted on the shot.
In the second half, Barker scored her ninth goal of the season 36:32 minutes into the game by shooting in the loose ball. 59:04 minutes into the game, Jamieson scored off a pass from Smith on a penalty corner.
With a 3-1 lead with just over 10 minutes left in the second half, the defense couldn’t hold onto the win. Reddig scored her second goal of the game with under five minutes left with senior back Brittany Grzywacz assisting on the play, and Herold tied the score with under three minutes left with an unassisted goal, forcing overtime.
Both teams went scoreless in two overtimes, leading to a penalty shootout. Penn State junior midfielder Laura Gebhart made the first stroke-off attempt for Penn State, and senior forward Ashtin Klinger followed to take a 2-0 lead.
Henn scored MSU’s stroke-off attempt shortly after, but MSU couldn’t hang on. Herold scored the game-winning goal for Penn State, giving the Nittany Lions their tenth-straight victory.
The Spartans will return to action on Tuesday, when they take on Central Michigan at home at 3 p.m.
