The field hockey team earned a 1-0 start in Big Ten play with a 3-2 victory over Ohio State last Saturday, but this weekend will present a tougher challenge — two away games.
With a 0-3 record in games away from Ralph Young Field, MSU (4-6 overall, 1-0 Big Ten) will look to find answers as they take on Indiana and Miami (OH) this weekend.
“Obviously, we want to go 2-0 after this weekend of Big Ten play,” head coach Helen Knull said. “For us, the win on Saturday (against Ohio State)… is a confidence booster. But you can’t rest on it. You have to keep executing and looking to the next game.”
With a tough schedule that consists of more road games than home, the current inability to win outside of East Lansing is a test for MSU.
Indiana has a 6-3 overall record currently, and a 6-1 record at home.
MSU will hope last weekend’s encouraging win over the Buckeyes will carry over.
“Going to an away game, especially Indiana, it’s still going to be really exciting,” senior goalkeeper Molly Cassidy said. “We’re really going to be able to carry that momentum and that excitement, even away from East Lansing.”
MSU will rely on Cassidy and junior forward Allie Ahern to continue their steady season play.
Cassidy has been a stalwart on defense for the Spartans. She is currently third in the Big Ten in total saves with 39.
Ahern has been one of the better offensive players in the Big Ten conference. She’s in a three-way tie for first in goals with 9, and is tied for second in goals per game with .90.
“To her credit, she’s doing a fantastic job in practice, just working on different skill execution and she takes her chances in games,” Knull said.
“She’s been finishing for us at the end of it, so it’s been good.”
Ahern hopes the drills the team is working on in practice — many of which concerning footwork — will aid the team this weekend.
“When we’re covering back-playing defense, we can’t plant our feet because then the defender goes right by us,” Ahern said. “We need to keep moving. That’ll really help, especially when the forwards are cover back. That’ll help the midfleld, and the defense. Just mentally staying in the game is what we need to focus on, not necessarily physical.”
MSU will play Indiana at 3 p.m. Friday and Miami in Ohio at 1 p.m. Sunday.
