With several NBA departures expected after the 2013-14 season, men’s basketball head coach Tom Izzo has been scouring the country looking for players to be part of the next generation of Spartans.
On Monday, Izzo secured another one.
Izzo picked up another commitment to join the 2014 recruiting class as Javon Bess, a three-star forward from Gahanna (Ohio) Lincoln High, verbally committed, joining guard Lourawls “Tum Tum” Nairn Jr., who gave his commitment in September.
Bess is listed at 6-foot-5, 180 pounds and indicated via Twitter that his position preference would be at shooting guard in college.
“That’s the thing they like most about JB,” said his high school coach Tony Staib in an interview with Spartan Magazine. “He is a long 6-foot-5; he can play multiple positions on both ends of the floor. He is athletic enough to guard smaller players. He is tough enough and strong enough to defend a bigger players down low.”
According to Rivals.com, Bess had offers from Xavier, Kansas State, St. Joseph’s and Duquesne, among others, but elected to join the Spartans after a recent visit to East Lansing.
However, verbal commitments are not official and will not become so until national letters of intent are signed in November. If a player does not take part in the initial signing dates from Nov. 13 to Nov. 20, they have to wait until the regular period starting April 16, 2014.
