The total donations toward the Michigan Ovarian Cancer Alliance is nearing $40,000 in response to the “Go Blue” skywriting prior to the MSU v. Youngstown State football game.
Pam Dahlmann, president of MiOCA, said $39,684 has been received from more than 1,000 donors worldwide, as of Monday afternoon.
Dahlmann, a University of Michigan alumna, said prior to this she couldn’t stand MSU, but after seeing the support from the Spartan community, she has had to reconsider.
“I am hugging Spartans whenever I see them,” Dahlmann said in a text. “(It) used to be hard to do because I am a U of M grad… not any more!”
The Oregon Aero SkyDancer skywriting company was paid by the University of Michigan Athletics Department to write dozens of slogans and numbers in the sky throughout southeast Michigan.
After seeing the response on social media websites, MSU Alumni Association director Scott Westerman decided to use the opportunity to raise money for MiOCA, an Ann Arbor-based company that raises awareness for ovarian cancer.
Westerman’s wife twice survived the disease.
Dahlmann has been attached to ovarian cancer since a young age, when her grandmother died from the disease. In 2011, her mother also lost her battle with ovarian cancer, prompting Dahlmann to start the non-profit organization.
