Six things to look out for at Big Ten media days

July 24, 2013

We are getting closer to football season, and it’s time for the Big Ten preseason media days and annual kickoff luncheon, which will be held from July 24-25 in Chicago. There will be plenty of things to be on the lookout for, from what’s ahead for MSU to trouble at Ohio State to Penn State’s resurgence. Three players from each team and all 12 head coaches will be attending, so let’s examine what to watch for.

LACK OF MAXWELL
Senior quarterback Andrew Maxwell, who started last season for MSU, will not be one of the three player representatives for the Spartans. Offensive guard Blake Treadwell, cornerback Darqueze Dennard and middle linebacker Max Bullough, all seniors, will attend. It is unknown who will start for the Spartans in the fall at quarterback, however Maxwell appears to have an edge. One theory is that Maxwell did not make the trip because Dantonio does not want to fuel quarterback battle discussions. Only time will tell.

BLAKE’S TAKE
There are plenty of question marks in the MSU offensive backfield; quarterback and running back are among them. As a likely starter on the offensive line, what will Treadwell have to say about the position battles at quarterback and running back? Maybe he will have some inside knowledge.

PROTECT THIS HOUSE
Last season was largely viewed as a disappointment for the Spartans, despite winning the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl against TCU. MSU lost every home conference game last season, and the Spartans certainly will look to bounce back and defend their home turf this fall. One thing to watch out for is how last season affected the team’s preparations and mindset going into this season. Will the Spartans be more motivated to protect Spartan Stadium? These are some questions that could be answered.

WHERE IS ROBY?
Ohio State’s football team had some troubles off the field this past week, with the suspension of projected starting running back Carlos Hyde and potential All-American cornerback Bradley Roby. Roby is facing a battery charge, and will not make the trip to the Big Ten media days. Senior safety and three-year starter Christian Bryant will replace him, and there will be plenty of questions about what will happen to Hyde and Roby going forward. It will be interesting to watch how head coach Urban Meyer will respond to and defend how he disciplines his players, especially after the arrest of former New England Patriot Aaron Hernandez, who played under Meyer at the University of Florida. There will be plenty of legal talk around the Buckeyes.

BUCKEYES REPEAT?
Speaking of Ohio State, last season they went undefeated, completing their 12-0 season with a 26-21 victory over the University of Michigan in Columbus, Ohio. However, the Buckeyes sat at home during the postseason due to a postseason ban from the NCAA after infractions were uncovered under previous head coach Jim Tressel. The ban is over and Ohio State surely will look to repeat last season’s success with the added pressure of competing for a postseason, and possibly national championship, berth. No doubt, that is the goal for the Buckeyes this season.

URSCHEL SPEAKING
Penn State senior offensive lineman John Urschel will speak on behalf of the players at the kickoff luncheon. A 2012 first-team All-Big Ten offensive guard, Urschel has been an three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and was an Academic All-American following last season. Urschel is a Big Ten Medal of Honor recipient, and is also a published author, with his paper “Instabilities of the Sun-Jupiter-Asteroid Three Body Problem” appearing in the journal Celestial Mechanics and Dynamical Astronomy. With all of the controversy surrounding Penn State following the Jerry Sandusky fallout, and head coach Bill O’Brien having a better-than-expected first season, a lot of eyes will be on Urschel and the Nittany Lions. Urschel will look to be a great spokesman for Penn State, as well as the players, with his past experiences and decorated resume.
