Former men's gymnastics coach Szypula passes away at age 92

The Spartan community lost an important figure in MSU athletics Saturday, as former men’s gymnastics coach George Szypula passed away in East Lansing. He was 92.

The first coach of MSU men’s gymnastics program, Szypula garnered numerous accomplishments during his 41-year tenure, including 252 career victories, an NCAA Championship in 1958 and Big Ten title in 1968. His leadership also produced 18 individual NCAA and 48 individual conference champions.

Szypula’s accolades include NCAA Coach of the year in 1966 and the NCAA Mideast Region Coach of the Year in 1987. He is recognized as a member of the U.S. Gymnastics Hall of Fame, East Lansing High School Hall of Fame, the Temple University Hall of Fame and the National Polish-American Sports Hall of Fame.
