50 Shades! The Musical is coming to Wharton Center June 22-23 and it’s bringing more than just unworldly sexuality.
The witty musical provides a twist to the erotic romance trilogy “Fifty Shades” by E.L. James — offering less orgasmic and more comedic moments.
“It’s a conjunction with the trilogy (that) shattered sales records around the globe,” public relations manager for Wharton Center Robert Hoffman said. “The important thing to know is this is a parody based on the ‘Fifty Shades’ trilogy but it’s not the book, it’s something very different.”
E.L. James’ “Fifty Shades” trilogy begins with a reserved college-aged beauty named Anastasia Steele who goes to interview young and handsome entrepreneur Christian Grey. Anastasia soon falls for Christian’s success, wealth and loving nature.
She later discovers that he has a deviant sexual nature and an insatiable appetite for control. Despite her reluctancy she decides to explore his dark desires.
Actress Spencer Rose, who plays the role of the book club lady, said the play adopted the book’s plot but added a few comical curves.
“It’s the same love story between Anastasia and Christian but we turned it on its head and made it a parody,” said Rose. “We’re poking fun at it and loving it at the same time.”
Rose was worried at first how the play may be received but she said the musical has so far proved to be something everyone of age can love.
“It’s a really funny, ridiculous, over the top, kind of sexy show, so we don’t always know how that’s going to land,” said Rose. “But it turned out to be something everyone loved, we received standing ovations, cheering, laughter and excitement from everyone in the audience on opening night.”
Media and information sophomore Juliann Otto said 50 Shades! The Musical sounds interesting, despite not being a reader of the books.
“It sounds like something I would want to go see but I think I’d want to read the book first,” Otto said.
