Women's golf breaks ninth-place tie, advances into NCAA Championships

May 11, 2013

The MSU Women’s Golf team broke a tie for ninth-place Saturday at the NCAA Central Regional.

The Spartans shot four-over-par for an eighth-place finish in the tournament. The top eight teams advance to the NCAA Championships, taking place in Athens, Georgia from May 23 to May 26th.

With a four-under-par performance, junior Liz Nagel had the lowest team score of the tournament today. Sophomore Trisha Witherby had the second best team score with a two-over-par.

The Spartans slipped into the championships by the skin of their teeth, as their final score of 884 edged out NC State’s final score of 885.

Judging simply by the first round, such a close finish would have been hard to predict. MSU started the NCAA Central Regional with a solid start in the first round Thursday, finishing with a score of 291 for a fifth-place tie. It was the third-lowest score in Spartan history.

However, the team was unable to capitalize on the record-setting outing, shooting a 13-over-par 301 in the second round on Friday. The clunker dropped MSU to a ninth-place tie. The standings were close at the end of the second-round, as MSU was only three strokes behind third-place Florida.

Senior Caroline Powers finished the tournament in a tie for 26th overall with four over par. Witherby finished the weekend with a total of 17-over-par, junior Allyssa Ferrell finished at 12-over-par, and junior Christine Meier finished with seven-over-par.

Duke finished in first place with a final score of 851. Oklahoma and Mississippi State finished in second and third place, respectively, with final scores of 857 and 872.
