Renovations coming to Spartan Stadium in 2014

May 13, 2013

MSU currently has plans for a $20 million renovation to the north entrance of Spartan Stadium. The renovation not only will benefit the football program, but the other 25 MSU sports, fans, media, recruitment and officials, and is slated to be completed by summer 2014.

The renovations will look to improve on operations that have been neglected since the 1960s, according to MSU athletics director Mark Hollis.

Spartan Stadium opened in 1923, and MSU has compiled a 334-142-13 record in the 89 years of calling the stadium home. The most recent expansion took place in 2005 and included a new press box and luxury suites, and new club seating that increased the capacity of the stadium from 72,027 to 75,005.

The project is part of a long-term renovation plan for MSU athletics facilities, which includes the $10 million project to add three new video boards to the stadium, completed in 2012.

New renovations will include a variety of facets: a recruitment center that will allow MSU athletics recruits to interact with coaches and faculty; more conveniently located food vendors and restrooms; improved locker rooms; equipment storage; media facilities; two new entrance plazas and coaching offices.

Donors such as Magic Johnson, Tom Izzo, Hollis himself and alumni will aid the renovations.
Hollis believes the renovations will exceed expectations and bring a great deal of pride to the university like so many other locations on campus.

The renovation goes to the board in June. Once approved by the board, construction will begin immediately.

“(The renovations) will change game day for virtually everyone (and provide) nothing but a positive impact,” Hollis said.
