New season brings new clothing trends

As school officially has come to a close, and summer has begun, there is no better time to revamp your wardrobe than now. Your favorite jeans are probably worn out and your friends are beginning to notice how you’ve been repeating your outfits.

Not to mention, it’s the beginning of a new season, and that means there are new trends to catch up on.

Summer is my favorite season because it’s full of exciting adventures. Many students will be busy with internships in big cities such as New York, Chicago and Los Angeles, while others will be busy traveling the world on study abroad programs.

There are many exciting events and gatherings that occur during the summer, so why not try to look your best? It’s time to dress to impress but keep in mind that dressing according to the weather is always key.

Since it’s only the beginning of summer, the sun isn’t at its strongest, and many people find it difficult to choose what to wear.

It’s really important to be aware of the temperature and dress appropriately. If not, you will really stand out — and I don’t mean that in a good way.

Don’t believe me? I have a perfect example.

Although the sun was out this past Mother’s Day, it was a very chilly day. My parents and I dressed appropriately in long pants with layers on top, but of course my brother decided to wear shorts, a T-shirt and boat shoes. He obviously didn’t check the weather before walking out of the house.

It’s important to be aware of the temperature when choosing an outfit because no one wants to look like they’re dressed for summer when it’s only 50 degrees outside.

As May rolls by and we move into June, the sun is going to grow stronger. It’s going to be challenging to pick out an outfit for the day, especially if you’re working in an office.

Who wants to wear dress pants in the summer heat? Not me.

A cute alternative to pants is a pair of Bermuda shorts! Believe it or not, short suits can be found on the runway and are very much in style this summer.

Also, don’t let the classic black and white office attire bring down your summer spirit because this color combination is also very popular for this season.

Some other fun summer trends for women include sporty dresses with dropped waistlines, statement sunglasses that represent your individual personality, bold stripes, leather pieces, beaded and embellished clothing and low heels.

All of these trends can be found at local clothing stores — even in East Lansing. Urban Outfitters, 119 E. Grand River Ave., does a great job at keeping up with current fashion trends and will offer you a more reasonable price than buying from a specific runway designer.

For those of you who are laying low this summer and enjoying your time away from school, I have some advice about what every girl must keep in her closet.

The best purchase I’ve made this summer thus far is a maxi skirt. I have worn this skirt out to dinner, to the beach and while I’m out running errands. It’s the most versatile piece of clothing I own, and there’s no way you can go wrong with one.

While visiting Chicago, I noticed numerous girls wearing maxi skirts out and about in the city. It’s a great look, and it’s super comfortable. Everyone’s doing it!

Summer is all about being comfortable and carefree. It’s a time to recollect yourself from the busy school year and enjoy doing the things you love.

For me, summer involves being by the water as much as possible. This means I need a cute swimsuit and a cool pair of shades to help me enjoy the sunshine.

Some of the most popular bathing suit styles for this year include: fringe tops, Brazilian bikini bottoms and one pieces. Get yourself a nice pair of aviators, and you’ll be ready for a day on the water.

Another must-have for summer 2013 is a pair of strappy, flat sandals. I’ve seen girls everywhere rocking this trend with their maxi skirts and high-waisted jean shorts.

These sandals can be found in discount stores, such as DSW, 2800 Towne Centre Blvd., in Lansing. Try this trend in a cute color combination such as brown and black, and they’ll match everything you own.

Whether your style is more contemporary, bohemian, laid-back or preppy, all of these summer trends can be altered to your personal preference. The most important thing to remember with trends is to never lose your own sense of style.

It’s time to cash in those old clothes of yours to Plato’s Closet, 2843 E. Grand River Ave., and treat yourself to some of the cutest trends of summer 2013.

Everyone knows that if you look good, then you’ll feel good!
