Cromie named Co-Big Ten Freshman of the Year

May 24, 2013

MSU freshman rower Katie Cromie has been named the Co-Big Ten Freshman of the Year. Cromie shares the honor with Catherine Shields of Big Ten champion Ohio State.

In addition, Cromie was named to both the All-Big Ten First Team, and was named Most Valuable Rower by her teammates.

This is the first time the award has been given to a first year-rower in MSU history.

Cromie joins former MSU rowers Stacey Hicks, Christen Brown, Anne Cowan, and Laura Cowal to earn All-Big Ten First Team honors.

Cromie rowed every race this year for a young varsity eight. She was one of six freshmen in the varsity eight boat.

After starting the season in the four seat, she moved into the stroke seat for the final three races of the year — helping a young varsity eight rapidly improve over the final weeks of the season.

The varsity eight boat finished fourth-place at the Big Ten Championships last weekend, as well as a fourth-place team finish.
