Tuesday evening, an unidentifiable amount of students who subscribe to the MSU Police Department’s text alerts received a text message warning students of a shooting on campus and to take shelter. The alerts turned out to be an accident by the shift supervisor on duty while he was trying to send out a severe weather warning.
“We regret the confusion that this started amongst our subscribers and we’re doing everything we can to make sure this doesn’t happen again,” MSU Police Assistant Director Tony Kleibecker said.
While the supervisor was attempting to send out the severe weather warning, he accidentally pulled up the warning for an active shooter and started to distribute it, Kleibecker said. Within the next fifteen seconds, he realized what has happening and stopped the messages from sending.
The police department is unsure how many students received this message. This mistake is the reason behind some students received a message regarding severe weather and others received untrue message regarding a shooter on campus.
The department sent out a corrected message to all the subscribers, Kleibecker said.
