Local beaches kick-off summer season

May 23, 2013

Students can bathe in the rays and soak in the waves starting Saturday, May 25 when Lansing-area beaches open for the season.

The beaches of Burchfield Park, 881 Grovenburg Road, Holt, Lake Lansing Park-South, 1621 Pike St., Haslett, and Hawk Island County Park, 1601 E. Cavanaugh Rd., Lansing, are shaking away cold weather memories and swinging into the summer season.

Weather permitting, the beaches at Lake Lansing Park-South and Hawk Island County Park will be open seven days a week, from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m., and the Burchfield Park beach will be open weekends and holidays, from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m., with trained lifeguards on duty only during open beach hours, according to Ingham County Parks Department.

“(There are) thing to do for everybody,” Brian Collins, park manager with the Ingham County Parks Department said.

The parks have baseball park-style concessions, boat rentals, volleyball courts, picnic areas and shelters, Collins said.

Lake Lansing Park-South and Hawk Island County Park have paddle boat and row boat rentals, while Burchfield park has canoe and kayak rentals, Collins added.

Hawk Island County Park also has a splash pad, a water park without any standing water, that is open from 9 am to 8 pm, Collins said.

Be Keller, an arts and humanities senior, said if she can find the time outside of work, she will get out to the parks.

“I did a little (kayaking) back in Girl Scouts and have been meaning to get back into it,” Keller said.
