Tuesday’s East Lansing City Council meeting was filled with discussion on hot button issues involving recycling, litter collection and outdoor seating for restaurants.
Director of Public Works and Environmental Services Todd Sneathen presented an update of the city’s recycling program, where he explained the effects of how Granger, the current third-party processor, has performed a single-stream method of operation since last summer.
Sneathen also said the single-stream method allows a more efficient curbside collection because it requires the sorting of only glass products while every other product is co-mingled, but it also presents difficulty in a loss of revenue because of the sale of recyclable materials.
“Another thing we would like to do … is have another permanent drop-off site,” Sneathen said. “It’s a difficult thing to do, to come up with another location”
The city has two permanent drop-off sites at the Department of Public Works, 1800 E. State Road, and at 841 Timberlane St. There also is one seasonal site at Patriarche Park, 960 Alton Road, that operates from October to April.
Councilmember Victor Loomis and Mayor Diane Goddeeris suggested placing a new location at either a school or a city park. Council responded by stating that noise from the addition of the site could be a potential issue.
Another discussion item from the meeting was Ordinance No. 1300, an amendment that would enforce stricter regulations aimed at reducing visual litter, which commonly becomes an issue in April and August when MSU students are moving in and out.
Abandoned furniture can pose a public safety hazard, Mayor Pro Tem Nathan Triplett said.
“It does put a strain on resources that (firefighters) have to address these small fires … and that takes away from being available to respond to a real emergency,” City Manager George Lahanas said.
A right-of-way license for Chipotle Mexican Grill, 539 E. Grand River Ave., was unanimously approved, which will allow the restaurant to have outdoor seating. The tables will be placed on the Grand River Avenue side of the building.
