The tournament is intended as a fundraiser for the club, Bierekoven said, so there will be a cost of $20-25 to register. There are three divisions — members, non-members and an open division that will play for money — with the winners of the two non-money divisions receiving prizes from a Lansing-based disc golf club.

Bierekoven said the tournament is the club’s only way to raise money right now, but he and the other 15-20 members are not expecting a massive turnout. The eventual goal, however, is to get the club established and eventually become an official MSU sport, allowing the team to compete at the National Collegiate Disc Golf Championships in North Augusta, S.C.

Bierekoven said organizing it has been pretty simple, especially compared to running a club with no money. For right now, he said he’s focused on holding the club together for the next year or so, because MSU requires clubs to exist for at least a year before they can apply to become teams, Bierekoven said. Until then, he said his goal is to promote disc golf and raise money.

“Hopefully it will catch on at MSU,” he said. “Although the really crappy weather all year hasn’t helped.”
