For those people who want to do something different after they finish their finals — or for those who aren’t in school and simply want to do something different — the city of Grand Ledge, Mich., presents an event for the Saturday and Sunday immediately following finals week: the Victorian Days.
From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 4-5, visitors can experience the Victorian Era for themselves. Events from the late 1800s and early 1900s, such as a corset symposium, an authentic 1860s baseball game, a moustache contest and a Grand Victorian Ball, will be available to the public along the Grand River in Grand Ledge.
Most events are free, but riverboat and carriage rides carry a small charge, as do entries in the Victorian model boat race. Tickets to the Grand Ball are $30 and can be purchased at numerous places throughout Grand Ledge or by phone. Visit victoriandays.org/ball.html for more information.
There will be a recreated Civil War encampment on Island Park, with a coordinated skirmish for control of the island, taking place 3:30 p.m. Saturday. So, don’t be alarmed if war suddenly breaks out on the river in the middle of the afternoon.
For those interested in entering the Moustache Contest, registration won’t begin until May 4. The contest itself will take place at 2 p.m., with registration open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Further info is available at victoriandays.org/moustache.html.
