As summer vacation quickly approaches and graduation sneaks up on some anxious seniors, it is the time of year when decisions are being made and students are making plans.

Whether it be working at a job or internship, attending graduate school or entering into the world without any set plans, seniors are amping up for the big day — reflecting on their time at MSU and looking ahead to the next step in their lives.

This weekend, The State News talked with a few graduating seniors about their plans and future aspirations after graduation in eight weeks.

Editor’s note: This is the first installment in a series of stories following students during the weeks leading up to graduation in May.

Jeffrey Grossman

Major: Media arts and technology

Hometown: Berkley, Mich., originally from Toronto, Canada

Aspirations: To direct and act in his own original film

Plans after graduation: He is planning to rent a U-Haul in May and drive out to Hollywood, looking for work.

“To have a hand in every aspect of making a film, it would be really cool to write and produce and direct and act,” he said. “My dream out of all that (is) to write and direct my own film.”

Silver Moore

Major: Journalism

Hometown: Detroit

Aspirations: To use journalism to tell stories about some of the underrepresented communities, ideally for EBONY magazine

Plans after graduation: Moore has been accepted into the Teach For America program and will begin teaching at a school in Detroit this fall.

“Journalism has always been my major. I thought about the ways I wanted to use it differently, though,” she said. “I am a woman and gender studies minor and an African American and African studies specialization, and I want to find ways to use my journalism in collaboration with (them).”

Jeff Morgan

Major: Packaging

Hometown: Portage, Mich.

Aspirations: To become a packaging engineer in the food and beverage industry anywhere in the country

Plans after graduation: As of now, he is unsure and is waiting to hear back about job applications. Morgan hopes to head for a job in Chicago.

“I’ve loved my time here at Michigan State and I really don’t want to see it come to an end,” he said. “But at the same time, I need to take the next step and get a job and have a family.”

Mia Kaartinen

Major: Kinesiology

Hometown: Ann Arbor, originally from Los Angeles

Aspirations: To become a physical therapist, possibly working with burn trauma patients

Plans after graduation: She plans to attend doctoral school at University of Michigan-Flint.

“My favorite (part) has been working with the trauma burn patients,” she said. “You see the most improvement with them, and in the first week or two it is extremely hard to watch. (But) after you see them walking again, it’s a big sigh of relief.”
