Student reports sexual assault in dorms

March 14, 2013

A student was sexually assaulted early Monday in West Holmes Hall, according to MSU police.

A 19-year-old female was meeting with friends at about 1:30 a.m. in her dorm room to discuss their spring break activities when a male acquaintance in the room reportedly reached over and fondled her breast, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said.

The fondling, listed as criminal sexual conduct in the fourth degree, could be a misdemeanor punishable by either up to two years in prison or a $500 fine, or both, according to the Michigan law.

An adult convicted of criminal sexual conduct in the fourth degree would have to register as a sex offender for 15 years, although their name would not be made public, according to the Michigan State Police website.

The woman declined to identify the suspect, press charges or seek medical treatment, McGlothian-Taylor said.
