MSU searching for university provost, ISP dean

March 19, 2013

Editor’s note: Standing Provost Kim Wilcox’s progress in applying for chancellor of the University of Wisconsin has been updated to accurately reflect the results of the job search.

At Tuesday’s Faculty Senate meeting, committee members adopted to recommend search processes for the university provost and the dean of International Studies and Programs, or ISP.

Both searches will draw upon faculty-led committees to determine the candidates who will be screened and interviewed for the positions.

A new provost likely will be chosen by next spring, MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon said during the meeting.

The new provost will replace standing Provost Kim Wilcox, who officially will step down in July. Since Wilcox announced his resignation in December, June Youatt has served as acting provost.

The university provost is the head of all academic affairs at MSU, such as curriculum oversight, enrollment, recruitment and faculty affairs.

Wilcox has taken a position with the Partnership to Cut Hunger and Poverty in Africa in Washington, D.C., a nonprofit organization that aims to improve Africa’s self-sustainability, run by former MSU President Peter McPherson. Wilcox also was in the running for University of Wisconsin’s chancellor position but was not chosen.

“(When) we get the committee established and begin the process over the summer … We will do the screening in the early part of fall semester and the interview process in late fall (or) early spring,” Simon said during the meeting.

“We (will) have an individual in place and identified for the (fiscal year) ‘15 academic year.”
MSU’s ISP dean search will occur this spring, and a new dean is expected to be chosen by the fall when current ISP Dean Jeffrey Riedinger steps into his new position as vice provost for global affairs at the University of Washington.

Riedinger is moving back to his hometown and will be closer to family, ISP Director of Communications Stephanie Motschenbacher said.

Motschenbacher said the ISP office is responsible for expanding international research and partnerships, promoting foreign language courses and globalizing the campus and curriculum, among other things.

Faculty Senate Chairman John Powell said Riedinger’s move is not out of the ordinary or unexpected.

“As an employment center people decide, ‘Hey, you know, I’ve got a job here (and) I need a new environment and I want to go somewhere else’ — it’s part of career development,” he said after the meeting.
