Snyder's budget includes increase in higher ed. funding

February 7, 2013

Gov. Rick Snyder unveiled a 2 percent increase Thursday morning for higher education funding in his recommendation for Michigan’s budget for the 2014 fiscal year.

Snyder recommended Michigan public universities receive a $24.9 million increase in 2014.

He also included funding incentives to keep public universities from raising tuition.

“It’s all about student growth,” the governor said during the presentation at the Boji Tower, 124 W. Allegan St., in Lansing.

Snyder also announced plans to issue a $100 million bond for universities that produce high levels of engineering students to encourage competition among universities.

Other highlights of the $51 billion budget include $1.2 billion allocated to transportation and fixing Michigan’s roads, as he mentioned in his State of the State address Jan. 16.-
