Requiring landlords to hand out voter registration information

Another public hearing will be held on a proposed ordinance requiring
landlords to provide tenants with voter registration information.

“I think that including that registration information with the lease
material is that extra push to get the student to register,” ASMSU
Director of Public Relations Haley Dunnigan said.

Landlords said the proposal would place an undue burden on them,
especially since the information is available through state programs.

At tonight’s regularly scheduled East Lansing City Council meeting at City Hall, 410 Abbot Road, council will vote on whether to renovate the former Evergreen Arms apartments and whether to approve a liquor license for the Black Cat Bistro, a high-end restaurant set to be built downtown.

The council also will hold a public hearing on proposals to ban any new hookah lounges from establishing in the city and whether landlords should be required to give voting registration information to new tenants.

The meeting is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. in the city council chambers at City Hall.
