MSU alumnus to present new movie filmed on campus

December 6, 2012

A new movie by an MSU alumnus that was shot on campus during this past summer is premiering Friday night at 7 p.m. at Wilson Hall.

The movie, titled “This Spying Life,” chronicles two fictional colleges in a battle of espionage, trying to get the upper hand on one another.

Jim Smith, who wrote, produced and directed the movie and also graduated from MSU this past spring, said shooting on campus went pretty smoothly, although getting people to show up was a problem at times.

“(That was) the plague of the project … having to recast people,” he said.

Smith said, overall 15 MSU students were cast for roles in the film, including three of the top four roles in the movie.

Parts of the film were shot inside Wells Hall, on Lot 83 and in front of Mason Hall. Smith said shooting happened from the beginning of July to near the end of August before classes started.

Carolyne Rex, a theatre and professional writing senior and one of the stars of the film, said she saw Smith’s posting online and she and her friend, theatre senior Alex Poling, went out and auditioned for parts.

“It was a lot of fun,” she said. “(It was) a really chill filming experience.”

Rex praised Smith’s work on the film, saying he had a great vision for the project and he invested a lot in it.

“He was really passionate about the project,” she said.

The film will be shown in room C102 in Wilson Hall. The premiere is being sponsored by the MSU International Relations Organization, or MSUIRO.

Christopher Bourdganis, president of MSUIRO, said Smith, who was a former board member at MSUIRO, approached the group about hosting the premiere.

“We have membership activities for our members. … He asked us if (we could) use his movie as a membership event,” he said. “We’re excited for (the premiere).”

Smith said it is a little strange coming back to MSU to premiere his movie, but thinks it will be a nice experience.

“(It will be) nice to come back … (and) see some people,” he said.
