The MSU volleyball team came into Friday’s match against No. 10 Minnesota riding on a wave of momentum after defeating No. 4 Nebraska last weekend.

That wave only has picked up speed, as the Spartans (20-7 overall, 8-7 Big Ten) downed the Golden Gophers (20-6, 11-4) in four sets (25-20, 17-25, 25-21, 25-20).

The victory not only boosts the team moral once more, but it gives the Spartans their first back-to-back wins against top 10 teams since 1995.

The first set started just how the Spartans last match ended, as MSU jumped out to a 16-9 lead. That did not sit well with Minnesota, who refocused in the middle of the set and tied the game up at 19 apiece.

MSU later closed the game on a 6-1, with balanced contribution as five players had at least two kills for the Spartans.

The second set, however, did not fare as well for the Spartans, as their only lead was 1-0.

The Spartans came roaring back late in the set, but could never get closer than two points. The fight from the Spartans seemed to fade late in the set, as they dropped the game 25-17.

All the drama happened late in the set, as a controversial call let Minnesota tie the game at 19 apiece. The point mounted a comeback for the Golden Gophers, but sophomore libero Kori Moster said the team regrouped well after the play.

“Those kind of calls) are really shows who the team really is,” Moster said.

The Spartans then rallied to win the game, 25-21, giving them a 2-1 match lead.

Last meeting with the Golden Gophers, the Spartans also grabbed a 2-1 lead, but squandered it as Minnesota walked home with the win.

On Friday, however, the story would not repeat itself, as the Spartans went on to win a hard fought fourth set, 25-20.

That victory gives the Spartans their first three-game win streak since mid-September.

“I could see a real strong look of composure at the end of the fourth set,” George said. “There were moments where we weren’t doing things really well, but I’m glad we regrouped and kept coming back.”

Junior outside hitter Lauren Wicinski led the offense with 13 kills, with sophomore outside hitter Taylor Galloway chipping in with 11 kills as well.

Junior and sophomore middle blocker Kelsey Kuipers and Jazmine White led the defense with five kills, and junior middle blocker had four to her name. Moster led the team with kills, with 18.

The Spartans look to extend their three-game win streak against Wisconsin at 6:30 Saturday at Jenison Field House.
