Twitter promotes class engagement

November 4, 2012

A few years ago, the social networking website Twitter gained popularity among citizens around the world. Although the 140-character posts, or “tweets,” the website prides itself on usually are used by students for recreational use, the website also is used by professors at MSU for educational purposes and many students who have not done so already should consider making a Twitter account for networking purposes.

A pair of MSU researchers recently made the argument that Twitter can be utilized as an effective tool in the classroom. Assistant professor of education Christine Greenhow and doctoral student Benjamin Gleason found that using Twitter in a college classroom can help increase student interaction and engagement, and in some cases, using Twitter can help increase grades.

But professors must be proficient in how to use the software for it to be effective in a classroom setting.

In an increasingly technological world, utilizing social networking websites in a classroom can be beneficial to students and professors. Many students already are used to using these websites and their features, which make using it for classes more ideal than a website such as ANGEL, whose features can at first be confusing to students. Twitter provides a basic line of communication between professors and students and gives students an easier way to communicate with each other. Using hashtags also can promote class discussion and make it easier for students to see what other students have to say about a topic or event.

Twitter also gives students the chance to connect with industry professionals. Although getting a Twitter account can be most beneficial to students in communication fields, such as journalism, because many professionals in this field have Twitter accounts, it can be useful in other fields as well. The social networking website can be utilized by students for networking with professionals and can be more personal than an email.

And even for those who aren’t aspiring journalists or public relations specialists, Twitter is helpful for students who want to keep up with current events. Regardless of what major a student is studying, it is important to be informed.

Of course, the argument can be made that using Twitter can cause more harm than good in a classroom. Some students can get distracted by its features and use it to communicate sometimes-inappropriate messages with their classmates. There is no doubt the website can be distracting to students in classroom if used improperly. Each professor will have to create his or her own set of rules on how to deal with these circumstances, but overall, Twitter can be more helpful than hurtful in a classroom.

As the world continues to become increasingly globalized and interconnected, Twitter is one of the tools that can help people from across the world connect with one another with the simple click of a button. Although many students use the website for entertainment, it also can be used in an educational setting, promoting discussion and engaging students in class material.
