Mansions on the Moon coming to Wharton Center

November 7, 2012

The Residence Halls Association, or RHA, is hoping to provide an out-of-this-world concert experience for students on Nov. 17.

RHA officially announced Mansions on the Moon will headline the 7:15 p.m. Nov. 17 concert at the Pasant Theatre in Wharton Center, during the organization’s General Assembly meeting Wednesday night.

“They’re up-and-coming,” RHA Director of Special Events Rodney James said. “They touch a lot of genres of music, so I think people will be able to appreciate it … They (will) have a wide reach.”

Tickets are free for MSU students and are available at any RHA movie office location or at the Wharton Center box office.

Mansions on the Moon, which lists itself as a crunk-electronica-pop group on its Myspace profile, recently released an EP called “Paradise Falls,” produced by rap artist Pharrell Williams.

James said he would call the group “alternative” or “alternative rock,” although “music is so ambiguous these days.”

“It’s extremely important for special events to happen on campus,” James said. “These are the type of cornerstones of your undergraduate experience that you’ll remember for the rest of your life.”

James likened concerts such as this to important undergraduate memories of tailgates and Halloween adventures.

RHA previously had a big-name artist lined up for the November concert who fell through, Director of Public Relations Abigail Bhattacharyya said in a previous interview.

Exciting announcements such as the Mansions on the Moon concert were commonplace at RHA’s General Assembly meeting Wednesday night.

Cheers echoed in the room multiple times with the announcement of a successful RHA movie office grand reopening last week as well as MSU’s successful bid to host the Great Lakes Affiliates of College and University Residence Halls, or GLACURH, conference next fall.

RHA President Kelcey Gapske previously said this is the regional conference for residence halls associations and that “it’s a shame that we haven’t held a conference in nearly 25 years.”
