Despite the two already having a presence in the Union, a new Multicultural Center and a North Campus Neighborhood Engagement Center are a few of several items on the agenda for the MSU Board of Trustees to vote on today at its monthly meeting.
If the estimated $10 million project is approved by the board, the separate centers will be relocated to the second floor, while the current offices and meeting rooms on the second floor would be designated to the ground floor, according to the meeting agenda.
Kat Cooper, the communication manager for Auxiliary Resources, said the Multicultural Center has been located in the Union for about 10 years. The engagement center temporarily was placed on the third floor in August because of the construction to the Union’s first floor.
“(It’s been) in demand for years by students for a larger space (for the centers),” Cooper said. “(There wasn’t) a better location to do that.”
Cooper said the North Campus Neighborhood Engagement Center will help bring many services for the students in North Neighborhood to utilize.
The engagement center will bring the total number of centers to five, with the purpose being a “local gas station-type (of) place for students (to find resources),” assistant vice president in the Division of Student Affairs and Services Kelley Bishop said in a previous State News article.
Although hospitality business freshman Erin Biel said she has never used an engagement center, she is glad to hear they are there if she ever needs help.
“I think it can be helpful for people who (need) them,” Biel said.
Also up for approval during the meeting is an authorization to proceed for construction of a new high bay building for the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams, or FRIB, which is expected to cost about $15.5 million.
According to the meeting agenda, the building will be used to create space for assembly and testing of the technical equipment for the facility.
Earlier this week, Vice President of Finance and Operations Fred Poston was recommended for the position of dean of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Before the appointment is official, the board has to first approve the recommendation today.
If approved, Poston will replace interim dean Douglas Buhler on Jan. 1, 2013. Buhler has served as dean since January 2011.
“I think it’s a positive move,” Trustee Mitch Lyons said earlier this week. “We need to get the college back on strong footing.”
