It’s been a little more than 10 years since I moved from Cool, Calif., and I still don’t think I ever will be able to get used to Michigan winters. Although I’m sort of a winter pessimist, I have to admit: the seasons are beautiful, and sledding and playing in the snow can be a ton of fun.

Since moving to this frozen tundra called Michigan, one staple item has gotten me through: sweaters. Comfy sweaters, colorful sweaters, crochet sweaters, Bill Cosby sweaters — really, I don’t discriminate.

Fall, winter and spring are times when it is socially acceptable to bundle up and look as if you’re about to embark on a weeklong Alaskan ice fishing trip just to make it across campus. Plus, they are cheap, and you can wear them anywhere. Nothing says, “I just want to dance the night away at the bar” quite like a colorful Cosby-esque sweater.

You might be wondering how you can get your hands on one of these fantastic finds. I’ve asked a few friends and conducted my own research to supply you with tips of the trade so you can find the best sweaters.

Salvation Army stores, Goodwill, etc: Here, you can find all sorts of different shapes, sizes, colors and fabrics, and they usually are at great prices. There really is something for everyone, especially all you cat lovers out there. You know who you are. It’s fun to visit these places often because there is always a ton of new selections. While you’re making the rounds finding fabulous sweaters, don’t forget to think of clothes you no longer wear that are taking up space in your closet. Goodwill and Salvation Army will accept clothes of all sizes and styles.

Hand-me-downs: These are some of my all-time favorite sweaters. Not only will they usually be in great condition, they also will hold sentimental value that you won’t be able to find anywhere else.

Your friends’ closets: What are friends for? Borrowing sweaters also allows you to try different colors, cuts, fabrics and styles. Not only will you be expanding your wardrobe, you’ll be sharing your love of sweaters with others. Taking risks is essential to every up-and-coming sweater enthusiast, and this is great way to do it.

With a crisp chill in the fall air, it’s no secret that winter is just around the corner. Make sure you are prepared for all the elements this year by stocking up on your cozy winter wardrobe. Trust me, your wallet and your warm and toasty self will appreciate it.
