Sparty’s Flag Find kicks off Homecoming

October 9, 2012

For criminal justice junior Meghan Kautman, the little flag she found in the bushes outside the Skandalaris Football Center solidified a goal she’s had since her freshman year.

“I looked everywhere and couldn’t find it,” she said. “I actually went home for 20 minutes and then came back because I just knew that if I looked harder, I could find it.”

Kautman is one of many students who participated in Sparty’s Flag Find, an event sponsored by the Student Alumni Foundation, or SAF.

The event, which has become an annual SAF tradition during the week before Homecoming, challenges students to venture across MSU’s 5,200-acre campus in search of two flags hidden either outdoors or in one of the university’s 642 buildings.

SAF Co-director of Membership Services Erin Lucian said the event is a fun way for student to uncover new sites around their university.

“It gets students exposed to parts of campus that maybe they don’t necessarily get a chance to see,” she said.

Each night, the flags are hidden by SAF members, and two clues will later be distributed out through the SAF’s Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr. Clues are presented in photograph or riddle form and posted at 8 a.m. and noon.

Once a flag is found, the student must return it to the SAF office, 333 Union Building, before claiming his or her prize.

Although some students, such as economics senior Christian McInnis, said they were completely unaware the event was going on, for others, such as Kautman, it’s something to look forward to each year.

“I’ve tried finding the flag every year for two years and finally found it,” she said. “I was so excited.”

Kautman’s detective skills earned her two free movie passes to NCG Eastwood Cinemas, 2500 Showtime Drive, in Lansing, with which she plans to use to go see “Pitch Perfect” this weekend.
