The Residence Halls Association, or RHA, will provide students with an opportunity to pre-emptively handle the calories from Halloween candy at the end of October.
RHA’s third annual Spartan Sprint 5K was the topic of discussion at Wednesday’s general assembly meeting. The race will start at 10 a.m. Oct. 27 in the East Neighborhood courtyard and will benefit the Michigan Capital Region Big Brothers Big Sisters, a youth mentoring organization.
“Big Brothers, Big Sisters is a great organization for Spartans to rally behind,” said Abigail Bhattacharyya, director of public relations for RHA, in an email.
Director of Health and Safety Katie Neumeier said the event is completely philanthropic, with 100 percent of proceeds going toward Big Brothers Big Sisters.
Early registration for the sprint will end Oct. 12, Neumeier said. Prices for students, $15, and adults, $20, raise $5 after early registration ends.
The participants in the sprint have the option of walking or running the course, which begins in East Neighborhood and winds through campus following the Red Cedar River, according to the registration sheet. The top three overall male and female runners will receive ribbons.
The event is focused on getting exercise, having fun and supporting a good cause, Neumeier said.
She said people should feel welcome to bring their families, walk or run with their children in strollers, and, overall, not be intimidated by the run.
Free RHA sweatbands and T-shirts, as well as granola bars and water, will be available to participants during the event.
Neumeier said her ultimate goal is to get 1,000 people out to the race. Last year, 120 people participated in the sprint.
“We have had great turnouts in the past and look forward to an even greater turnout this year,” Neumeier said in an email.
Other announcements at the meeting focused on on-campus entertainment updates.
Director of Special Events Rodney James announced an RHA sponsored concert for Nov. 1, although he was unable to announce the artist until contracts are signed.
Greg Rokisky, director of movie offices, said the program to run the movie offices, where students can rent movies on campus, will be discussed with Residence Education and Housing Services on Thursday.
The offices were slated to open in the last two weeks but the program to run the system was deemed inefficient, pushing the reopen date back to the week of Halloween, Rokisky said in a previous interview.
