It wasn’t easy, but the MSU hockey team (1-2) used a three goal third period to rally from a 2-0 deficit to get its first win of the season, knocking off Niagara (1-2) 3-2 Friday night.
Junior defenseman Jake Chelios got the Spartans on the board first with a goal from the point 8:28 into the third period, igniting the crowd.
About three minutes later, junior center Lee Reimer rushed the net to tip the puck past Niagara’s junior goaltender Carsen Chubak and tie the game at two.
The two goals gave MSU renewed energy, that was capitalized on when sophomore forward Matt Berry’s power play goal gave the Spartans their first lead with just over five minutes remaining, a lead that wouldn’t be relinquished.
The Spartans will hit the ice against Niagara again Saturday night (7:05 p.m.).
