After a crucial win against Michigan on Wednesday, the MSU volleyball team looks to build a winning streak against Ohio State on Saturday.

Despite dropping out of the top 25 over the weekend, the Spartans (16-5 overall, 4-5 Big Ten) walked out of Ann Arbor after playing one of their best games of the season, sweeping the Wolverines in three sets. The Spartans will look to carry the momentum of their convincing victory into Saturday.

“If we step out on the court with the same aggressiveness and the same execution of our game plan as tonight, it’s hard to say anyone can beat us,” sophomore libero Kori Moster said.

Not only did the Spartans come out with a high-octane offense that included a .312 hitting percentage, but they also had superior chemistry and communication than they displayed during their two-loss weekend.

“The energy and the chemistry (was great), we worked really well together today,” junior outside hitter Lauren Wicinski said. “We know every game is going to be a battle, and if we can stick together as a team, we can do some really great things.”

Although the Spartans played at the top of their game on Wednesday, they still will have their hands full with an Ohio State team that has won four of its last six matches. A key in this short week of practice for the Spartans will be to regain their focus after a high-adrenaline game against Michigan.

“We got a huge game against Ohio State, and they are very, very talented,” head coach Cathy George said. “We just need to regroup, get some rest and get back and focus for the next match.”

The Spartans most likely will continue to rely on Wicinski, who leads the team with 326 kills on the year, including 18 against Michigan on Wednesday. The defense will rely on junior middle blocker Alexis Mathews, who has been stifling opponents at the net with her team-high 98 blocks on the year.

The Spartans square off against the Buckeyes at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday at Jenison Field House.
