Brian Regan aims to be the people’s comedian.
Lyman Briggs sophomore Joanne Lewis said she’s a fan of Regan because his jokes aren’t overly complex.
“His humor is easy to understand,” she said. “He makes his jokes about everyday things that people can relate to.”
At 7 p.m. on Oct. 28, Regan will be performing his stand-up routine at Wharton Center.
“
Regan is an observational comic, drawing material from occurrences that happen in an average person’s everyday life.
“Every once in a while, something jumps up and down and says, ‘I’m funny, can I be in your act?’” Regan said.
Attendees of his Wharton Center show should not expect blue collar comedy — Regan refrains from swearing or lewd jokes when onstage.
“Onstage, (dirty humor) is not what I gravitate to,” he said. “Different strokes for different folks.”
Kinesiology sophomore Molly Peterson said Regan’s humor contributes to his success.
“I like Brian because he isn’t crude,” she said. “He’s funny without being obscene.”
Regan said depending on the audience, his routine might include some modified content, but will include many of his usual jokes.
“If I feel like most of the audience is college students, I might avoid my routine about signing a mortgage,” he said. “When you don’t relate (to a joke), that’s an extra element you’re missing out on.”
Regan had just 10 credit hours between him and his anticipated graduation when he chose to put college on hold to pursue his grander goals.
“I had a passion and a dream, and I knew I didn’t need a degree to pursue stand-up comedy,” he said.
Eventually, after tasting the successes of his dream, Regan returned to Heidelberg University and completed his degree in communication and theatre arts.
“It was just a nice feeling to finish something completely, especially of that magnitude.” he said.
Although it was a risk, Regan said he doesn’t regret it.
“My advice, especially when you’re young, (is) if you have the opportunity to take a little gamble … go after your dreams,” Regan said.
For his act, Regan said he would like to offer pie to attendees, but instead offers his humor.
“I know I’m going to have a good time,” he said. “I’d love people to come out and have a good time with me.”
