Conrad's to open new location

August 2, 2012

After opening its first location in 2007, Conrad’s College Town Grill, 101 E. Grand River Ave., is expanding its horizons.

The restaurant is opening another location on the other side of town in the former location of Papa’s Pizza and BBQ, 1219 E. Grand River Ave.

Conrad’s owner Joe Conrad said since the first location opened in 2009, the plan had always been to open a second restaurant down the line.

The new location will have the same menu as the current Conrad’s, but Conrad said the good thing about a second location is that it will allow for the restaurant to deliver late at night.

”Last year people would call late at night and we couldn’t even pick up the phone, which upset our customers,” he said. “This location is going to be more of a delivery location so we can deliver late seven nights a week.”

Conrad’s shift manager Grant Pero said while currently Conrad’s relies on traffic from the post-bar crowd, a second location further east down East Lansing’s major road should build another demographic for the restaurant to capitalize on.

“We don’t get busy until 1 or 2 (a.m. here), but there we should be busy all night from people just walking around,” he said. “You’ve got all those houses on Spartan and Stoddard (avenues) and the only place that’s open real late down there is (Bell’s Greek Pizza) and McDonald’s.”

Pero said the second location — which is scheduled to open by August 15 — will allow for Conrad’s to expand its delivery area, in addition to increasing its walk-in customer base.

Conrad said he looks forward to tapping into the younger crowd with the new location — students who may not be old enough to go to the bar, or go out in the downtown, but still get hungry late at night.

“It’s a totally different crowd on that side of town,” he said.

He added that the new location would have a parking lot, which could bring in another type of customer — daytime workers.

“I definitely think now that people can park there, it’ll draw in a crowd by itself,” he said. “I think I’ll get a lot of extra business from people in a more convenient location.”

Pero said he expects the restaurant to have to hire between 15 and 20 new employees when the location opens.

Community and Economic Development Administrator Lori Mullins said a new restaurant opening near the East Village provides a unique service for those living in the area, and adds convenience for those who may not want to travel as far for their food.

“It’s always nice when a business is doing well enough where they want to expand their markets, and we’re pleased to see that with Conrad’s,” she said.
