Senior guard John Deyo announced Tuesday night on his personal Twitter account that he plans to transfer to Western Michigan University for his fifth season of eligibility.
The 6-foot-6, 305-pound Deyo, a native of Battle Creek, Mich., appeared in 36 games during his four years at MSU. He was listed as the second-team right guard entering spring ball this year behind senior Chris McDonald, who was recently named to the watch list for the Outland Trophy, which is annually awarded to the nation’s best interior lineman.
“He has informed our coaches that (transferring) was his intention,” Associate Athletic Director John Lewandowski said.
As of Wednesday evening, Deyo still was listed on MSU’s roster and was not present on the WMU team roster.
According to MLive, the lure of potential playing time was a factor in his decision to transfer.
“I love Michigan State to death, but when an opportunity like this comes up, I have a chance to play and get significant reps, (and) it’s pretty appeasing,” Deyo said in a statement to MLive.
Since Deyo already has graduated with a degree from MSU, he will be eligible to play immediately for the Broncos.
“I am not able to comment on any student-athlete who has not enrolled at WMU,” WMU Director of Athletic Media Relations Mat Kanan said in an email. “I hope to have more information by Aug. 6.”
